Fwd: Response--Re: U.S. Museums owning contemporary art quilts

Please read the correspondence below about the heart mountain quilts.
Also remember the TAGY meeting is this Monday the 10th.
Hope to see you all there, Linda
PS We will have a SAQA exhibit at our Yellowstone Quilt Fest in September.  And remember our challenge of 'Wild West'quilts is due in August to show at YQF.

Linda,
Would you please forward this to the TAGY group? I hope we can get something going with this! Thanks, Lili

Sandra,
The new director of the center is Dakota Russell. His email is- dakota@heartmountain.org
I think that would be the easiest way to reach him.
I appreciate your interest in these art quilts. Jeanne Knudsen was the exhibit curator for the show and worked with HMIC to donate the quilts to them. She would also be a good person to contact as to the history of our TAGY group. She is one of the founding members of our group. Her email is: jeannek55@gmail.com
Thank you and best wishes,
Lili Turnell

Dear Lili,

Thank you very much for this information! I will update my list.

This collection sounds quite interesting and I may want to write an article on it for Art Quilt Quarterly, SAQA's new magazine.  As curator for the Texas Quilt Museum, I might be able to offer our location as a venue but first would need to discuss that possibility with our Board in September.  Could you please give me the contact information for the appropriate person at the Center?

With best wishes,
Sandra

Sandra,
I just finished reading your article in SAQA Journal, Vol. 27, No. 2., which I found very interesting.
The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, located between Cody and Powell, Wyoming, owns 22 art quilts. These quilts were donated by 17 members of our art quilt group, Textile Artists of the Greater Yellowstone or TAGY. The quilts were made for our 2016 challenge 'Heart Mountain Relocation Center'
Naomi Yoshimura Ito, who was incarcerated at Heart Mountain as a 15 year old, also created a quilt called  "Letting Go".  She made the quilt in 1990 and donated it to the Interpretive Center in 2015.
We were fortunate to have the Interpretive Center Foundation publish the quilts in a book called 'The Fabric Of Memory', which is available through the Center gift shop.
The quilts traveled to a museum in Big Timber, MT, for a show this summer and we hope there will be future exhibitions, at other museums.
Thank you again for your article.
Sincerely,
Lili Turnell
Meeteetse, WY
