March 2020

At the March TAGY meeting we had about 25 members and guests including about 6 from Red Lodge, MT.  Bonnie took the lead with an inspiring program on Sashiko and Boro. She took a class in Hawaii on the Japanese art of Boro, and shared the highlights with us.

Bonnie explained that Boro is from the word boroboro which translates as rags, or something tattered or repaired.  Boro, which is patchwork, fell out of favor after WWII, but is now becoming popular again.  Today's boro art now is called boro-inspired. Boro is done on an open-weave fabric and is not suitable for batik.

Sashiko is decorative stitching where the larger stitch is on the top of the fabric and a smaller stitch on the bottom.  Bonnie provided us with "cheater cloth" kits which are marked with a design to follow as you learn Sashiko.  For additional supplies contact Bonnie Blakely at SewNowWhat@icloud.com
